Please be sure to also read Shere Crossman's essay below mine. Shere is a breeder/exhibitor of Exotic Shorthairs in NY, and she has also bred and shown both dogs and horses in the past. I'm not sure if everyone is aware, but this ordinance just passed committee and is going to the CA legislature for a vote. If passed, ALL pets in the state of CA must be neutered by the age of 4 months - there are NO exceptions for breeders or show quality animals. IF this bill becomes law it will not only put all breeders in the State of CA out of business, but it will effectively end all showing of cats and dogs by residents of CA except for altered cats. No altered dogs can be shown. No association can support showing with only Alters (TICA) (Premiership in CFA) This is already catching on in Texas where they are in the premilinary stages of drafting a similar bill. (I have not had time to verfify the info about Texas yet, but I was given the info a few days ago by a friend/breeder in CA) These lawmakers who are voting for this bill do not seem to realize that if this passes and eventually moves on to all states, there will be NO MORE dogs or cats bred in the United States, and all shows will eventually fold along with the registering agencies as the only pets allowed will be neutered cats and dogs already born (or those of pregant queens/bitches) when this bill goes into effect. What does that mean?? I suppose the only access to purebred dogs and cats will come from other countries. I wonder if they will add legislation to stop the import of unaltered animals from foreign countries. My guess is that this will follow closely on the passage of legislation for pets in the U.S. This sounds extreme, and it is! But sadly, the lawmakers behind this bill are either ignorant to the longterm effects of the bill, or they don't care. Think of all the businesses that will be affected in addition to breeders. There will eventually be no need for small animal vets as within 20 years of passing this in each state there will, in effect, be no more cats or dogs other than those imported -- and at a premium price I might add. What about all the pet food manufacturers? PetCo? PetSmart? Pet Supplies for Less? What about the places like Revival? Pet Edge? etc. What about suppliers of other pet accessories? Groomers? Pet sitters? Dog walkers? Even if these lawmakers hate dogs and cats, are they thinking of the millions of people they are putting out of work? Are they thinking of the economic ramifications of destroying the multi-billion dollar pet industry? And are they thinking of the joy they are taking from those of us to love and pamper these little 2-4 ounce babies and raise them into loving pets or outstanding show prospects? We need to unite to stop this before it spreads like a wildfire. Write to your congressional representatives, and urge them to stop this. Cite all of the people who will be hurt by these laws in addition to rights that are being denied Americans. If we don't act now, these people will take the rights of breeding and pet ownership away from all American citizens.
