Hi,
I'm Danny. I'm the current PMC of Apache Labs http://labs.apache.org
You may not know about Apache Labs, but it was founded a few years ago
to provide the ability for committers to spin up new projects at the
ASF. Our website says:
"The aim is to provide the necessary resource to promote and maintain
the innovative power within the Apache community without the burden of
community building.
Research efforts are intrinsically associated with a higher mortality
rate and don't satisfy the established incubation and development
practices. Labs provides a place for the Apache committer community to
collaborate on such efforts - without discrimination of purpose,
medium or implementation technology."
But labs needs a shot in the arm, we already know that the project
doesn't live up to the aspirations of the statements above, and that
the service provided needs to be modernised and made relevant. What we
don't know is whether *you* think that this is worth doing, we don't
know whether we should we revitalise Labs for your use, or retire it.
So I am calling on all interested, or merely curious, parties from
across the ASF to subscribe to labs@labs.apache.org
<mailto:labs@labs.apache.org> and let me know if you are prepared to
help put Apache Labs on the map.
If enough people offer a little of their time I will steer the group
to do some "market research" (we are the market) and create a
consensus proposal for a refurbished Labs offering, then we will
validate that with you, and see if it gets enough interest to make it
worth implementing. If there is not enough volunteer help to assist
with the awareness activity and the research the Labs project will be
retired.
Personally I don't want to see Labs retired, I think that it would
enrich the ASF if we had a useful service for committers who want to
innovate from scratch, and a lively community of innovators and mentors.
If you think that labs is worth saving and are prepared to devote some
of your time to helping me, please subscribe to the labs@labs list and
say "hi".
Thanks for your time, and please remember not to spam commiters@ or
cross post, come to labs@labs if you want to engage in the discussion.
