Hi Bev -

"Went south" is an expression used to describe a failure,
such as "the stock market went south".  And when my sister
(who hails from Atlanta, GA) asked why it was un-PC, she was
told that it was a slur against Southerners.   I think it's
a good example of over-reaction!
