I think Gordon Bennett was a real-life Irish journalist, but can't remember the story that went with him ... However, I use his name in the same way <G> - "Gordon Bennett!" as an expression of dismay and disbelief. A kind of "good grief" as in the Peanuts cartoons. In fact, when I was teaching maths to 11-year-olds (not the quickest class) they needed to know who G.B. was, as I mentioned him so often. I persuaded them that Gordon Bennett was the patron saint of maths teachers ... They seemed to believe me ...
