I try to keep in touch with my sprig, which, despite a dstance of 3000 miles, is posible due to e-mail (I don't "do" 'phone<g>)... I forwarded him the bits on Gordon Bennett; he forwarded back a couple of websites... The first one must be the one from which Jean has quoted -- it seems to be "word for word" in part. But it's more extensive, so I'm leaving in the URL for anyone who'd like to explore some more.

It's the *second* one which is a "keeper", to be bookmarked and checked occasionally... If you scroll down, you'll find *an* explanation of how "Gordon Bennett" became an expletive... You'll also find questions with no answers provided (much more fascinating, IMO <g>) One of them is, um, "topical"... :)

Just today, my cleaning woman quoted (sneeringly, I'm happy to report <g>) someone's opinion ("men work harder than women, they're smarter than women, they *ought* to be paid better"), and I responded with: "and the moon's made of green cheese..."
