In fact it was United that I flew with and had checked the bags 2-1/2 hours prior to departure. I had a 12 hour layover a Schipol and wanted to get rid of them as soon as possible. And, of course the other bag made it there. I can not comment on KLM's ability to lose luggage as the last time I flew that airline was 1967 when I worked for them in Alaska.
