I would think that if you added something fitted over the pointed ends it
might work as one end is spring loaded.

I've decided not to be fascinated by bobbin winders. At Christchurch Lace
Day on Saturday there was a second hand metal bobbin winder rather like the
Newnham nylon one for sale, and I was showing a lady (who didn't know how it
worked) how you squeezed the jaws open, and how it was too stiff for me to
operate properly. The jaws snapped shut, catching a bit of the tip of my
finger, and I bled profusely, which just proved the point that it wasn't
suitable for me!
