We live in Suffolk, just between Ipswich and Colchester, and I very rarely
ever remember to lock my car, and/or the house! And when we go home to
Wales (our part is north Pembrokeshire) we don't lock up anything at all,
and neither do most of our neighbours, so it isn't really a case of the
entire UK being a haven for car criminals! The upmarket part of Cheshire
is probably a magnet to thieves of all descriptions purely because it is a
desirable and up-market place to live. The more humble areas probably
don't get troubled at all!

Carol - in a hot, dry and sunny Suffolk - I went to the seafront at
Felixstowe today, and actually forgot to close the windows on my car, when I
sat on the sea-wall - but I did lock the car up very thoroughly!!!

That was a very fortunate escape for your grandson. But what amazed me was
that it was safe to leave a car unlocked. In this country car crime is rife
and in large chunks of the country (entire United Kingdom) we have to lock
our
cars at all times. When I was on the Isle of Man someone I was talking to
said
she had put a crook (sp?) lock on her car, which was itself locked and was
in
a locked garage. This was in an upmarket area of Cheshire which is regarded
as a very desirable part of England to live. Which possibly attracts
criminals - who knows.

But I have heard of a locked car being stolen from a locked garage while the
owners were at home.
