Hi all 'The Shipping News' by Annie Proulx Both the book and the movie of the same name are very good (the latter, directed by Lasse Halstrom, starring Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Judi Dench, Jason Behr, Cate Blanchett..and a couple of good Canadian actors too - excellent combination).
I cadged the following from a review at the amazon site: ...(the reviewer) started reading fiction again after reading The Shipping News. It was so good that...wanted to find more contemporay fiction of this caliber...Proulx studs the landscape with some grotesque characters and others who are extrememly real. The writing is as sharp as a razor; a single word used in one chapter..how apt it was... The theme of the book is redemption and learning; the main characters learn and change. This is what makes this book worth reading... The author Carol Shields jumped to mind as maybe a similar sort of 'read' - but I've only scimmed her titles in the bookstore - always seem to pick out the same one and reading the page think ugh, this is contrived... bye for now Bev in Sooke BC (west coast of Canada) whose current summer 'read' is Irish Myth, Legend, and Folklore by WB Yeats and Lady Gregory To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED]
