As from midnight last night certain weapons of mass destruction were banned
in the UK (and, I think, other European countries). They could be bought up
to midnight, and then the shops selling them had to remove all stocks from
their shelves, and they can't be bought this morning. Any that we have
bought must be used up in the next three months, and anything left after
that has to be disposed of properly by local authorities.

What it means is that we're no longer able to buy certain pesticides and
weed killers for garden use. The problem is that no-one bothered to
publicised this European directive (they frequently don't) so the public and
the local authorities weren't aware of it until a couple of days ago. I've
probably got stuff in the shed sold only for agricultural use which I had
when we had a couple of acres in Somerset 6 years ago. So I'm already
illegal.

>From the Guardian newspaper:

"More than 80 popular garden pest and weed control products now on sale are
to be outlawed in two weeks and will have to be disposed of by local
authorities, but most councils are unaware of their new responsibilities.
Lawn feed and weedkiller products sold under their own labels by Asda, B&Q,
Boots, Do-It-All, Homebase and Woolworths are being banned from sale on July
24 by an unpublicised European directive.

>From Christmas, the ban extends to gardeners who have the chemicals stored
in the shed. On January 1 it will become illegal to use products containing
ingredients like dichlorprop, tar acids and Trifoline and, as toxic waste,
they must be handed over to local authorities."

The stupid thing is that some of the products will be repackaged (not
necessarily with a modified recipe), and will be able to be sold again.
