What about saying that although you were impressed, there were only x number of spaces free in the choir, and that you had too many applying who were whatever she sings (soprano, contralto, etc) - or tries to sing. That it was very difficult decision to make, but that unfortunately on this occasion she wasn't one of those chosen, but that shouldn't stop her auditioning in the future.
