The characters were experiencing a nasty winter storm... the author described in detail just how cold the air was so you saw little clouds every time you exhaled...and how the wind blew through their coats... The sleet, freezing rain, slipping on the ice... on and on he went...
And after reading for a while, I realized my toes were freezing!! My fingers were even cold! So I suggest finding a good novel that takes place in the coldest place you can think of and reading it with a "coolie" around your neck!
