I have not had good luck with flashlights in emergencies either... the batteries have always died by the time I need it!! But I recently saw a new device in a catalog... The flashlight requires no batteries at all! You just shake it up and down several times and the magnets inside build up a charge that lasts for about three minutes... need more light? Shake it again!! Definitely something that would work while you looked for the fresh batteries!! I'd hate to have to shake the thing for hours...
