Jean Nathan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The government also has plans to charge for travelling on certain motorways (freeways?)........
Here in Sydney, Australia, we have quite a series of motorways where we pay a toll. That's because the government, not having the money to build the roads themselves, let private contractors build them and allows them to charge to recoup the cost of building the roads in the first place. After quite some years, the roads will eventually revert to the government. The tolls mean that travelling from one side of Sydney to the other can be quite an expensive exercise, passing through three or four toll collection points, depending on the direction of travel...depends whether the driver considers the resulting time-saving worth the money. It also means having a lot of loose change around to pay the tolls - or else buying in advance an electronic ticket which goes on the windscreen and is "swiped" by a camera as you pass through the toll gate. It is only in the past few months that the various private owners have got together to issue a universally-accepted electronic card...until then you had to have a separate ticket for each toll road! .....The council haven't got the sense to work out that people would rather go into the car park in the centre of Poole, The mention of this carpark brings back a memory! Some years ago, on a trip back home and on a very hot day, I was visiting Poole, where one of my cousins lives. I parked in the carpark and went for a nice, long stroll around Poole, returning several hours later. There I found that a bottle of orange juice I'd forgotten days before, and which had been rolling around the floor of the car, had fermented with the rolling and the heat, and had exploded in the hire car, showering the inside of the car with a foul-smelling orange "goo"! Took me hours to clear it up, and the smell was still in the car when I returned it some weeks later! Ruth Budge (Sydney, Australia) http://search.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Search - Looking for more?
