I'm one of those who can't find thing if they're neatly put away, although I do try and get things tidy about once a month.
When I was teaching I knew exactly where to lay hands on tweezers, elastic bands, staples, paper clips, plasters for cuts, etc in my desk. I had to go on a course for a couple of days, and a supply teacher took over my classes. When I got back he asked "And who was it who threw the hand grenade in your desk drawer? I used a bit of spare time to tidy it up. It was only a couple of days before it got back to my "system" and I could find things again.
