and it became evident that the regions near the beaches would be under water 
very quickly if the ice at the poles started to melt!

Don't blame the Arctic for this one.  The only ice that can raise sea level 
is ice on top of land.  I know it doesn't seem logical but if you don't believe 
it, fill a glass or bowl with water and ice cubes so the water level is right 
at the top and the top of the ice is therefore floating above the rim.  Leave 
it to melt.  It all fits.  All to do with mass and density and stuff like 
that.  Good experiment to do with kids and you may even be able to make some 
money out of it by taking bets on the result because it seems so obvious it must 
overflow.

Another experiment I keep meaning to do comes from one of the Laura Ingles 
Wilder "Little House on the Prairie" books.  Allegedly you can take a full glass 
of milk and a full glass of popcorn and piece by piece put the popcorn in the 
milk with out it overflowing.  Has anyone tried this?
