My brother travels the world for the EU and for an inernational standards organisation, and he told me what happened to his 80 year old travelling companion when they returned to the UK from Germany recently.
His companion had forgotten to put a small manicure set of scissors and nailfile in a leather pouch into his checked-in luggage, and it was found as they went to board the plane. The security people were going to confiscate it, but he refused to hand it over because it had sentimental value to him. Instead he went through check in again with just the manicure set and checked it in just as it was, naked so-to-speak. He nearly missing the plane, but he was satisfied that it hadn't been confiscated. My brother said that he'd be lucky to see it again, but when they got to Heathrow, on the carousel was a very small white box with his companion's name on it, and inside was the manicure set.
