Although this thread died a while ago, I wanted to add my recommendation for
a book that I have found really helpful, Miriam Nelson's _Strong Women Stay
Young_. The emphasis is on strength training, that is, free weights (cheap!
Can be mail-ordered in the US and you don't need a gym membership! Great
exercise for winter, when you don't want to go out as much), combined with
proper diet. I have to say that I saw results really fast. In two weeks I
was considerably stronger and had no trouble shlepping around disassembled
floor-to-ceiling bookshelves at Ikea, which are not light. I can now do
biceps curls at 6 kilos and leg exercises with considerably more. If you
need a quick course to build up your strength and endurance, this one works
very well.

Miriam Nelson is an MD at Tufts U. who pioneered her work with residents of
a nursing home, so the emphasis is on safety and the fitness needs of older
women (she talks a lot with osteoporosis and how to avoid it--broken hips
are one of the leading killers of older women). You can find out more about
her books and programs at her site-- http://www.strongwomen.com. I subscribe
to her monthly newsletter to keep myself motivated. The book is still in
print and widely available from on-line sources. I bought my copy from
Abebooks for $5.

who keeps a 5 kg dumbbell on her desk at work to use while the computer's
booting up and to intimidate cranky project managers
