>>I'v just been watching the TV news about Bush's visit next week with incredulity. He's been invited by Blair, but he's staying at Buckingham Palace with the Queen. The CIA wanted Buckingham Palace fortified and the Underground network closed down for the duration, as well as the complete clearance of the streets of people and vehicles. In other words London (and all its businesses) would have to shut down while he's here.<<
I thought the one about the underground was funny. Do they seriously think that someone can smuggle enough Semtex onto a tube train to not only blow it up, but blast up to 60 metres of earth and concrete above it apart and blow up Bush who just happens to be standing above the train?? It's hard to know how much of all this is true. I heard on Radio 4 today that the White House always makes outrageous demands for security when the President travels abroad, expecting that eventually a compromise will be reached so they get what they actually wanted all along. I'm quite looking forward to it all. Anything to liven up London life for a few days and give the Evening Standard something else to rant about for a bit <g> London survived the Blitz - I'm sure it'll survive Bush...
