Hi All, In Brattleboro we used to have street numbers like Tamara. Then Vermont got Enhanced 911. Now if there is an emergency we can dial 911 for help, just like in big cities.
However, that meant everyone got a new street number. Now the street numbers are how many feet (yards?) times 10 your house is from the end of the road you live on. Actually how far your driveway is from the end of the road. They also gave all the roads and lanes names too. There are a lot of little side streets in Vermont. They were going to change the name of my street - Frost Place being too similar to Frost Street across the brook. Happily they let us keep our name! Some of the numbering is very weird. My DH works at a hospital that is like a college campus with a lot of buildings. The numbers start at the front gate and follow the loop of the road so the first numbers and the highest ones are very close to each other. I don't know who decides what end of the road they start from either. And I'm not sure if even numbers are on one side of the road and odd on the other anymore. We changed from even to odd. Oh, I usually mean about 1/8 of a mile when I use the word block. And Brattleboro is not laid out on a grid because there are so many hills and a big brook running through it. The streets follow the contours. Jane in Vermont, USA where it's getting colder. We've been having warmish temps. considering the time of year. And Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it now!
