I'm a newcomer to this list (well sort of; I was subscribed a few years 
back, and have only recently returned), but I might have a useful 
suggestion in terms of finding out whether the fire really happened or 
not:

1. See if you can find the local paper for the town online and see if 
there's a report of the fire.
2. Call the local fire department.
3. publicise the contact information here.

There was a recent similar case 
(http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/012804/new_20040128065.shtml) that 
was bringing up questions of fraud on LiveJournal, and it turned out 
that it was true--but various people checked, and made the means of 
checking public.
