I first ran into that phrase when a friend of mine, born in New York state and living in Indiana, quite plump and probably over 40 was explaining why she no longer had any dresses (frocks) in white eyelet, though she loved them!

Ought to have been a Polish phrase, being so expressive... But it's Brit, through and through, alas <g>
