I'm not sure whether my earlier message would have made sense to any not
familiar with the subject so to clarify.

When TV's originally started to be produced they used a coding system with the
initials NTSC (don't ask me what they stand for).
In this case the coding system is basically determing, in simple terms, which
way the electron gun or rather magnets direct the beam and the frequency at
which the electron beam travels across the screen.
The UK, Australia and other countries waited for a while, and a new coding
system was introduced called PAL (again don't ask what PAL stands for). PAL
I'm told is superior to NTSC but that was in England so I won't swear as to
the veracity of that statement.
Anyway the different systems is why US videos would not play on UK TV's. Some
modern TV's/videos will play both PAL and NTSC - they automatically switch
modes.
Regarding playing various zone DVD's - as I said I'm not sure whether the
PAL/NTSC would be a confounding factor. For more information on the differents
zones Amazon does have a fairly good blurb on it.
Hope that helps

Peter
