Liz, isn't that how Prime Minister Howard got it last time, on preferences.
Coming from Canada, I find the whole preference voting thing really
confusing.  My DH ran in the local elections once and so saw things in a
different prespective, thankfully he didn't get in.   I couldn't believe how
the man who got in as mayor  could have so few votes in his own name and get
elected.  In a rather "funny peculiar" manner, his name was seventh on the
list of contenders for mayor and there were just over 450 votes where voters
put BULL.... on the list,  the I was counted by the electoral office as a
number 1 not at a letter, giving him just enough votes to win, what a hoot.
