A couple of days ago at the Tesco supermarket that I said had insufficiently
shielded chip'n'pin keypads, an elderly lady paid for her groceries with her
debit card and had GBP50.00 cash back (drew 50 pounds out of her bank
account at the checkout). A young lad used his photo mobile phone to send a
picture of her to his mates outside in the carpark. When she came out of the
store, one of them snatched her bag with the money in, jumped into the car
his mates were waiting in and they sped off.

With keypads insufficiently shielded, someone could text the numbers they
either worked out that you'd pressed, or saw you press, to someone outside
the store, who could then steal your card in whatever you had it in and
wreak havoc with your bank account until you could put a stop on
transactions. Being shocked, it could take you some time to get yourself
together enough to call the right number to get a stop on it.

My only other thought is to take a cloth with me to put over the keypad so
no-one could see or work out what keys are being pressed.
