The compnay I work for would kill you for this !!!!!!!

You wouldn't believe the number of calls I take at work asking why they have
to
use a 0870 number, particulalrly for enquiries about delayed/damaged orders!

I never use the IVR menu whenever I call my bank, or whatever, as I can't be
doing with all that nonsense either. That's why I try and do everything
online,
no hanging about and as long as BT is playing ball, it's so much quicker.

Many UK companies have 0870 telephone numbers, and when you ring them you
get a series of menus. Although the cost is fixed for all 0870 numbers
(unlike 0900 ones) of about 7.5 pence per minute, the company still gets a
cut, and the longer they can keep you going through menus, the more money
they get from the call.

To cut the cost to you, you could try 'pretending' not to have a star button
on your phone. Apparently this gets you through to a human quicker than the
menus, although I haven't tried it. Alternatively, here's a web site which
gives alternative telephone numbers for companies (sometimes 0800 ones which
are free, otherwise geographical ones which can be a lot cheaper than the
0870 one). The article that contained the web site URL says that these
numbers are reserved for sales channels, but that they end up at the same
call centre as the 0870 ones.
