Hi everyone I have already replied privately to Helen. Just to inform anyone who is interested, Canadian banks accept without additional fee monies in other major currencies. I can deposit into my bank a cheque made out to me in, for instance, GBP, USD, AUD, etc. from a friend's bank account in that respective country. The teller does the conversion for that day's exchange rate. There is no extra charge for this other than usual bank fees (which they seem to find enough small charges here and there to annoy us). Helen mentioned she has a credit union - they, too, can accept cheques in GBP etc.
For a fee, a person can send an electronic transfer through the Post Office. This is interesting - a transaction came to me from France, the cheque was from Canada Post for an amount converted from euros to dollars.I could not tell who it was really from until I searched the document for the sender's name in tiny print! When I received it, I deposited it like any other cheque.
