Does anyone remember having to wear navy blue nickers for playing netball? It was an all girls school but the boys hung around the railings when we were playing!
Throughout the 11 yrs of my schooling (7 yrs primary school starting at 7, and 4 yrs secondary school) "gym suit" consisted of a white T-shirt and a pair of navy blue... well... I don't know what to call them... Boys wore straightforward shorts, but the girls' version had elastic in the leg openings as well as at the waist, and we wore them on top of our regular underwear. Which was pretty much like what's called "boxer shorts" here (without the front opening, naturally), just made of knit fabric, and was even less compatible with sanitary pads than the gym version. Since I hated the sanitary belts, I tended to wear those "bloomers" even when not scheduled for gym class.
On my first independent trip "West" (UK, at 18) I bought loads and loads of lovely, well-fitting underpants which started at the hips, and hugged all-around. Enough to even give away a pair or two to the most-beloved friends. And tights - they were just coming in, that summer of '67 - for everyone. And enough tampons (discovered those, too, that summer) to last me almost a year (severely rationed, and worn only to parties and other "active occasions" like beach and gym). All that loot was well-worth starving and saving every penny... :)
