I've noticed too that (apart from 'Eastenders', where there are more villains than normal people living in one small area, and even the normal people aren't normal!) purely British films, TV series, plays, etc often use accents to differentiate the goodies from the baddies, with the baddies having Geordie or gruff Scottish accents as a strong contrast to estuary English goodies.
