Gentle Spiders,
I don't mind propping up my son's self confidence by asking idiot
questions - once in a while - but I don't like to present myself as a
total idiot to him all the time; he's supposed to respect me, dammit,
and not only for the superb Polish cooking... :) So, I thought I'd
appeal to y'all, who know me well enough not to suffer disappointment
at my lack of puter skills <g>
I'm contemplating - if there are places available still. If there are
not, all the psycho-trauma can be laid to rest <g> - attending a class
with Greet Rome-Verbeylan (Belgium) on Lierse Kant (tambour lace along
the Coggeshal lines rather than the Limeric ones. Ie, no *needle* work)
in Harrisburg, PA, a week before the IOLI Convention in Denver. And
it's been tick-tock, in the best Libra fashion, throughout...
The class would have been my second choice, if I'd put in a second
choice (I hadn't, because my first choice was likely to be wildly
popular, and I didn't want to endanger that). Tick.
It'll be taking place "on my doorstep" (by US standards); a 90-120
minute drive on one of the most vicious highways, but I've "been there,
done that" 4-6 times in the past couple of years, so it doesn't scare
me *rigid* anymore :) Tick.
But I'd have to do "city driving" on top of highway driving, and that
*does* scare me rigid. Tock.
The 3-day (weekend) workshop is, actually, 3 *full days*, not 2.5, as
most weekend affairs tend to be. Tick. So the price ($150) is more than
reasonable. Tick. And the organisers managed to get a local woodworker
to make the frames - to Greet's specifications - at $60, instead of
$75. Tick.
But it's only a week before the Convention... Even discounting he cost
of two events, two intensive classes, one on top of the other, might
test my stamina to the outmost. Tock.
Because the event will be small (the single workshop, ie 12-15 people),
it's likely to be filled by local people. That is, most attendees will
be driving to class (at a Holiday Inn) and back daily. I can't do that
- the distance is too much to cover twice daily - so I need a "hotel
perch"... Expensive. Tock.
The Holiday Inn where the class will take place is already filled for
the time in question... DH said that, IHO, that was enough to nix the
whole proposition - driving through an unknown town, in the
morning-rush traffic, to meet a class? And trying to find a parking
place for 8 hrs??? Tock, to square power :)
The timid me agrees, entirely. The lace-rabid me tries to find an "out"
which would allow me to find a reason to overcome the "tocks" <g>
The organisers have, kindly, provided a list of nearby (within a mile
or so) hotels, and even suggested which ones might be less expensive.
So, I started checking them out, and that's where I ran aground...
You (well... *I* <g>) would have thought that a "Day's Inn, Harrisburg,
PA" or"Red Roof Inn, Harrisburg, PA" would bring a single, easy to
comprehend, response from Google... Not so :) Each hotel brings up
*many and many* choices, all bewildering. The Holiday Inn (hosting the
workshop) was the only one where I found a "book directly on line"
(among many others), and which offered discounts for AAA...
Unfortunately, all it did was to confirm the info I already had - no
rooms available during the required period :)
So, what I'm asking (took me a long time, but I *am*, finally, winding
down to the nub of the problem <g>) is this: when y'all need to find
such info, *how do you reduce the bewildering smorgassboard to 2-3
"sensible possibles"?* Or do you, patiently, plow through all the "50
ways to leave your lover"? If you chose "optipon 2", when, in God's
name, do you still find the time to sleep, eat, and read, not to
mention make lace? How on earth can one determine *which* of the "Red
Roof Inn" listings *to* investigate????
Yours, beginning to think that www is an over-rated blessing. I spent
some time today exploring my flight options to Denver (just in case I
*do* get my class choice there). All options are at least $200 higher
than a flight to Northern California (which is *waaaaay* farther than
Denver)... I'll keep peeking, for the next week or so but, if they
don't relent, I'll book through my local travel agent. All *other*
things being equal, I'd as soon support *her* as Travelocity (et al); a
small, cozy "screw" is always more acceptable than a big, reaming one
:)
