The Viking my Mother had (in the 60ties) was *Swiss*. As were the
first Berninas I'd seen in this country (in 1973). It's like threads
and their origin... Mettler, anyone?

Sewing machine history site - says Vikings are made in Sweden and
have been manufactured since 1872. Maybe your brain (often similar to
mine in other respects) has done what mine sometimes does - look at
the Sw and mingle Sweden and Switzerland?
Obviously, *someone's* brain had leaked, but it wasn't mine *this time*

I was told by my Mother (mother knows best? <g>) that the machine was
Swiss-made. I probably wouldn't have remembered that bit if info, if it
hadn't been for her frequent complaints: "I can't *believe* this is
Swiss" she'd say, "my Swiss-made watch *never* needs repair".
I believe she bought the Viking/Husqvarna machine (rather than a
Singer), somewhat against her better judgement, on recommendation from
a friend, *because* she was told it was Swiss. And because it was
cheaper. And more easily available (you could get it from the Jewish
Association immediately, instead of having to fight with the Polish
shops for a year)... So it's odds whichever way on whether the friend
wanted to help my Mother (and Mother happened to get a lemon), or
whether she was helping the J.A. to get rid of a whole bagful of
lemons, or whether she herself got the countries mixed up...
I do get many names confused, but usually it's "people names", not
"country names" - Diana, Dianna, Diane etc will have my brain in a
whirl, as will the variants of Laura and Jacqueline when in their
nickname form. But, to me, "Szwecja" (Sweden) is "sexual revolution and
cold" and "Szwajcaria" (Switzerland) is "Alps and banking", and the two
remain, dutifully, in their separate mental compartments... :)
