Having spent some time re-reading the 'history of lace' section from my
library, it seems that inspiration for Beds lace came from Maltese lace,
also as Jane says from many other sources, and particularly with Lester, the
opening of Kew Gardens and London Zoo around that time.
Designers found it easier and quicker to design the intricate patterns to
fit in a plaited ground than to fit into point ground. The lacemakers were
just given the new patterns, and worked out their own techniques!
The more elaborate designs also went better with the change away from white
muslin dresses to heavier fabrics.
At the moment I find leaves a pleasant respite from rose petals, so enjoy
making them.
