the area i live in does a lot of crochet still.  i think maybe places
like walmart can't compete with the mail order catalogs.  every one i
know who crochets usually orders from "mary maxim" or "annie's attic".

i can see also how they couldn't mass produce some bobbin lace
equipment with the exception of selling books and some of the tools. 
with the spangles and pictures you put on bobbins, you would think
someone would pick that up to merchandise.  people collect everything,
and everything is a collectable. 

our library carried only one book that isn't there any more, but there
is also inter-library loans.  that is a sure thing for any book.  i
know one of the lace guilds lends out books for a small cost, but that
still involves too much mailing back and forth.  it is still worth the
wait, but still a hastle.
