Of course red and purple do go - fuschias (one of my favourite flowers)
range from cherry red sepals and purple petals, through any shade of red,
pink through to green for the sepals, with almost any purple, mauve, pink
through to white in the petals and no-one thinks any of the colour 
combinations clash.
