Tamara's email rminded me of a return of goods I had to make to an Argos
store in the late 1980s (I might have sent this in before).
I returned an item for (GB pounds) 19 pounds 99 pence. The assistant had to
write out a returns slip with the amount in figures and words. The figures
were OK - next to the pre-printed pound sign she wrote 19.99. She wrote the
words as "nightie nightie nigh". Correctly written it should have be
"nineteen pounds ninety-nine pence", but, accepting that the store didn't
employ the brightest youngsters, I'd have been happy with "nineteen ninety
nine".
