Until we changed to broadband, which wiped out the message I'd put on our
answerphone and it reverted to the one the equipment came with, the message
callers got was:
"This is Jean and Bill's ex-directory number, so you should only be calling
us if we've given the number to you. If you are calling to tell us that
we've won something, to make us a special offer or are cold calling for any
other reason, then please ring off and get yourself a worthwhile job which
doesn't involve intruding, uninvited, into people's lives and trying to part
them from money for something they don't want. If you are a genuine caller,
then please leave your name, number and a short message, and we'll be happy
to call you back as soon as we can."
As the answerphone only cuts in after nine rings, I don't think anyone it
was aimed at actually heard it (most ring off after 5), but it gave me a lot
of satisfaction to think that one of them might.
