I thought the following was amusing -- I always like "jokes" made by life better than the ones crafted by humans; among other things, they have the advantage of being new... :) The snippet comes from my Polish e-newsletter (Donosy, which means "reports" but also "denunciations"), which I read so as not to forget the language. A very rough translation follows the original text.

Precedensowy wyrok

Skarb Panstwa ma zaplacic 5 tys. zl odszkodowania niepalacemu
wiezniowi, ktorego zamknieto w jednej celi z palaczami (mimo, ze
uprzedzal, ze szkodzi mu dym). Sluzba wiezienna boi sie teraz
lawiny dalszych tego typu wnioskow.

Precedential sentence

The State Treasury has to pay 5 thousand zloty (about one month's wages, I think, and ca $1550 according to today's conversion tables. Comment mine, TPD.) in compensation to a non-smoking prisoner who'd been locked in the same cell with smokers (even though he'd warned that the smoke was bad for him). Prison services are now afraid of an avalanche of petitions (suits. TPD) of similiar kind.

Best wishes for the tail-end of the tired, old, '05; may '06 treat you better :)
