The Ashes are the Holy Grail of cricket. England and Australia battle
it out every 18 months for a small wooden urn with the ashes (literally)
of a bail. The Ashes came into being when a disgruntled UK cricket fan
burnt a bail in the late 1800's symbolizing the death of English cricket
('coz the Aussies, who were still a colony at that time beat them).
They are treasured by both Countries and on display at Lords Cricket
Ground in the museum. I've been very fortunate to see them, and it was
a most awe inspiring moment to see for real - up close and personal -
just what The Prize is. (It was also something else to do the tour of
the ground and to walk the stairs to the Visitors Dressing rooms that
Greats have trod before).
Cheers,
Helen, Aussie in Denver
