Our nearest Tesco, which isn't a small one, has a habit of taking off the
shelves "duplicates" of items and only keeping the one which sells best.
This store is patronised mainly by families with young children who go for
price rather than quality. They sell a lot of their own-brand "value" lines
and standard own-brands in preference to the well-known ones. If Tesco do
their own brand of Golden syrup, it's possible that the store visited was
only selling this and not the Tate and Lyle brand.
As I never buy anything with the Tesco label on for serious reasons which go
back to the early 1970s, and I prefer quality over price, I do the bulk of
my shopping further away at Sainsburys and only pop into Tesco for the odd
item, provided it has a well-known manufacturer's brand label on it..
