I've recently obtained a postcard depicting a lacemaker, details are 3945
The "Wyndham" Series and it shows 'Pillow lace workers at Beer'. Nothing
unusual as such about the card, it's one I've seen on numerous occassions.
What has intrigued me is the message on the back and the comment about the
post is also quite amusing, it seems nothing changes where Royal Mail is
concerned!
It is dated 2 September 1905 and postmarked Branscombe. It has been sent to
Mrs Gibbs, Lock House, Roath Dock, Cardiff.
The message reads -: Dear Mrs Gibbs I received the 3 sprigs safely, but have
not yet received the one you intended posting a fortnight ago, I hope it has
not got lost in the post. Shall be glad with as many as you can make please.
Ida Allen
Ida gives her address as Hole Farm Branscombe, nr Beer.
Can anyone give me any further information about either Ida Allen or Mrs
Gibbs please?
I have been looking and I shall search again tonight at the family history
centre, but so far I've not struck lucky.
Another postcard that I picked up at the same time shows some sprigs of
Honiton lace and a picture of a lady which I believe to be a Mrs Woodgate.
It is postally dated 16 May 1911 Ottery St Mary, and the message on the
reverse mentions that the lady in the picture was involved in making lace
for the Queen's coronation (Victoria).
Amazing what an old postcard can reveal isn't it. It also answers what I've
been doing lately (re: an earlier question posed recently) - sorting and
cataloguing my lace postcard collection a job that has been outstanding for
absolutely ages and now that I'm retired as Chairman of Suffolk Lacemakers
and have a little spare time to myself I'm trying to get a few outstanding
jobs done. Now back to researching for my book!
