Helen asked about experiences with "Virtual PC" a prgram that
emulates Windows on a PPC-based Mac.
We have used versions of it for some years - an older version running
Windows 95 and then 98 on relatively old Macs, and more recently the
latest version running Windows XP on a Mini and a G4 PowerBook.
The main PC programs we have used are: web browsers (one of my main
reasons for using it is to test web pages), Word, FileMaker Pro, my
own Java programs, and CodeWarrior and NetBeans programming IDEs.
With these our experience is that Virtual PC works but is generally
*slow*. We get particular short jobs done, but I'd hate to have to
spend time doing serious work with a heavy duty program.
My son is always tells me I should by a cheap PC laptop but I never
have done and now I never will because I could buy an Intel-based Mac
and run Windows on it using Bootcamp. (But I haven't done that yet
because it would mean an investment in new software to get the most
out of the Mac.)
