SACRED OR PROFANE? The Ballarat Star reported the following incident in September 1867, showing something of the way theatrical ventures were regarded by many of the more 'respectable' citizens of the day.
The members of the choir of the Church of England at Sale "struck" on Sunday last. On enquiry being made as to the cause of their conduct, it transpired that one of the members of the choir had rendered himself offensive to the clergyman by joining the local dramatic club, and received an intimation to the effect that he must elect which of the two engagements he would relinquish. The matter was ultimately referred to the bishop, who supported the minister in the course he had pursued. Not caring to have their liberty invaded, the choir resigned in a body, thereby endorsing the action of their brother chorister.
