Co-incidentally, following Malvary's emails on children born in the 1940s,
50s and 60s, there was a programme on BBC2 TV this evening basically saying
that we were much happier in the 1940s and 50s than we are now. We had
little money, but there was less neurosis and fewer suicides. Hitler thought
that if he bombed the cr** out of us we would become demoralised. In fact
the opposite happened. People became more determined, bonded more and help
each other out.
A couple of weeks ago, a family in Christchurch (the next town joined on to
Bournemouth, which is joined on to Poole) was having a conservatory built on
the back of their house. When digging the foundations, the builders found an
unexploded 500 lb World War 2 bomb. The very lucky young builder who found
it didn't recognise it as a bomb. He thought it was a boiler, attacked it
with a jackhammer and used an angle ginder to remove its fins! How many
boilers gave fins? Then they noticed it had a detonator. The bomb squad
evacuated first an area of 200 yards around the house and then suggested
people further out should find other accommodation for the two nights it
took to remove and detonate it.
