When I got married, I took my husband's surname, but also kept my own as per Dutch custom. On all official documents my surname is Boddington-van Giersbergen. As it is so long, it often get shortened on junk mail to Boddington-van Giers/van Giersberg. The other day I took a junk call from India and the young man wanted to speak to mrs. van Gierberg, only he could not pronounce it and stumbled along, with me assuring him that no person of that name lived here. English people have asked me whether I was blue-blooded, having such a long, hyphenated name. My usual response is something along the lines of: they were bloody, but not blue. I think it all comes down to personal choice, many English women (like Cherrie Blair/Booth) continue using their maiden name for some purpose and their married name when needen and calling themselves Ms as well.

When you get married in UK, do you lose your maiden name or do you keep it with the name of your husband ? For example: my maiden name is Heijblom, my
husband's name is Jaumotte and since I'm married, my name is
Jaumotte-Heijblom. Is it the same in UK ?
