I went down to the hospital for my routine monthly blood test this morning
and was chatting with the phlebotamist about our discussion of things too
early. She said she could beat it all - she stayed with her daughter over
near year (forgot to ask her where) and she said their little corner shop
had Hallowe'en stuff on sale. They asked the owner if it was left over from
last year, but he said he'd cleared all that and this was new stock for this
year!
I then called in at Tesco (supermarket) and had my usual conversation with
one of the managers. Told him we were currently spotting the first
Valentine's cards and Easter eggs, and that he was way behind by not having
them on sale. He said they'd both been in the warehouse at the back of the
store since 23rd December, but he wouldn't dare put them on the shelves yet
because he thinks he'd get lynched.
They've got half of one side of an aisle filled with Christmas wrapping
paper and the other side filled with Christmas cards, all at 75% off. Great
for those on low incomes who buy this type of thing now, but what a waste of
the earth's resources in terms of trees and the energy used to make them! I
recycle my cards by cutting out the useful bits like holly motifs, etc and
then using them and other bits to make my own cards the next year on new
card blanks. The rest of the card goes in the recycling bin.
