Well... I don't know about heartless... Presumably, each of the
siblings got *something of equal value* when your mother's estate was
dispersed. And, presumably, each of you would have felt free to dispose
of your inheritance as you saw fit. Sure, she should have offered it to
you (all) first, before putting it up on E-Bay but, in general, jewelry
has always had two functions: as an ornament and as an investment. If
she didn't wear it, why shouldn't she sell it? If it had been your
mother's car, or table silver, or antique furniture that she'd got as a
part of her inheritance, would you have the same objections? Did she
get the ring *on top of* something else, of equal value, that the rest
of you got, or was the ring a part of her rightful share?
It's always easy to dispose of someone else's property, just as it is
easy to spend someone else's money...
