I've switched off hibernation on my laptop, but I do have it set to standby
after 30 minutes on mains and 15 minutes on battery and the hard disk is
turned off after the same time. Just a touch on the spacebar brings it back
to life again. The longest it's left unattended is when it does a full
system virus scan. It's got a bit slower as I've added and removed software
over the years, but I've never gone back to factory setting with just
Windows XP and the Sony Vaio software installed. I switch it on when I want
to use it and off when I've finished. I also have restore points set once a
month or when I install new software so I can take it back to an earlier
time or date when all was fine if things go wrong. I dread the thought of
removing all my software and reinstalling it. All my data files are backed
up on to an external drive each week.
DH did have a problem with his laptop once when he forgot to turn it off and
it went into hibernation. It should have switched back on to the point he
left it when he pressed the power button. It did, but it promptly went back
into hibernation and did that every time he pressed the power button. He's
now switched off hibernation and all is fine.
