Apart from the battery, you also need to check that everyone in the house
can hear the smoke alarm. My FIL could hear normal speech, but he couldn't
hear the smoke alarm because the sound was too high pitched and was out of
his hearing range. There are alarms available with a lower pitch. FIL had a
flashing light on his alarm, but it was so faint that it wouldn't wake
anyone. He was too tight to spend the money on one he could hear.
DH has a similar problem. He can hear the smoke alarm, but he can't hear the
beep made when our digital thermometer sounds to indicate the final
temperature.
