If you go to this:
http://tinyurl.com/
you can enter a long web address and convert it to a tiny one. You might get
asked if you will allow access to the conversion page - it's OK to do so.
You end up with something like the following, which you can then copy and
paste into en email:
http://tinyurl.com/pbskw4
which is the
http://weblogs.newsday.com/news/opinion/walthandelsman/blog/2009/04/ part of
the link you gave, and which does work, but which doesn't take you where you
intended.
