Seems the problem isn't a stuck shutter - DH has tried all the possible remedies for that. It's to do with the CCD image sensor As I understand it the "glue" that holds it in place. In damp or humid conditions it can fail and the sensor becomes detached. In the temperate climate we have, the atmosphere can be either damp or humid or both.

One person who persistently contacted Canon Europe was told that the camera was originally intended for sale in the USA only, and they have been told to deny a problem with the camera for anyone who bought it elsewhere. He did suggest that the person could try sending it to a friend in the USA and get them to see if they could get the repair done for free, but he added it was unlikely to succeed because they know which serial numbers were sold where and unless it was originally sold in the USA they would refuse to repair it.
